Terms of Service
Last updated: September 14, 2026
The short version: play nice and bring your own photos. There's no account to create and nothing to cancel. You're responsible for the pictures you put on the TV and for having permission from the people in them. The host runs the room and can remove any photo or any player. Add-ons are one-time purchases handled by Apple or Google, and none of them make you win. We run this as a small operation, as-is.
1. Accepting these terms
These Terms are an agreement between you and ALJ Labs LLC ("ALJ Labs", "we", "us"), the company behind Play Table. They cover the Play Table mobile apps, the TV screen, the web player, and this website (together, the "Service"). By using the Service you agree to them. If you don't agree, please don't use it. If you're setting up a table for a household or a group, you're accepting these Terms on that group's behalf.
2. What Play Table is
Play Table turns a TV into a shared game table that people join from their own phones or browsers. A host starts a room; everyone else joins with a code or by scanning the QR code on the screen. The TV shows the shared table, and each phone shows one player's private hand. There is no sign-up, no password, and no profile.
Rooms are temporary. The room lasts as long as your game night, games load into it and are torn down when you switch, and when the room closes it and everything in it cease to exist. The Service is not a place to store anything.
3. Your licence to use the app
We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the Play Table app on devices you own or control, for your own non-commercial entertainment. That's a licence to use it, not a sale — we keep all rights we don't explicitly give you here.
You may not:
- copy, sell, rent, sublicense, or redistribute the app or its content;
- reverse engineer, decompile, or disassemble it, except to the narrow extent the law specifically allows despite this restriction;
- modify the app or run it through a modified or automated client, including scripts or bots that play on your behalf;
- strip out or hide our marks, credits, or notices.
The app updates over time. Games, packs, artwork, and features may be added, changed, or removed, and we may require a current version to keep connecting to our servers.
4. What the app asks of your device
Play Table asks for as little as it can, and only when you use the feature that needs it. Each one is an operating-system permission you can decline or revoke at any time in your device settings — declining only disables that feature:
- Camera — to take a photo for your avatar or a face-pack card. Only used when you choose to take one.
- Photo library — to pick an existing photo, and, if you ask us to, to save an avatar you made back to your library.
- Local network (iOS) — to find Chromecast-compatible devices on your Wi-Fi so you can cast the table to your TV.
- Vibration — for haptic cues, like your turn starting. You can turn haptics off.
- Billing (Android) — so Google Play can sell you an add-on.
The app does not record audio, and does not ask for your location, contacts, calendar, or health data. On iOS a microphone permission string is present because of a media-picker dependency; we never record with it. What the app keeps on your device, and what it doesn't send us, is set out in the Privacy Policy.
5. Who can use it
Play Table is made for a general audience playing together in the same room. If you are under the age of majority where you live, use it with a parent or guardian involved. A host is responsible for who they let into their room.
Do not add a photo of another person — especially a child — without that person's permission (or their parent's or guardian's). This is the single rule we'd most like you to take seriously.
6. Photos, avatars, and face-packs
Putting real faces on the cards is the point of Play Table. Those photos are your content, and you're responsible for them.
- You need the rights. Only add photos you're allowed to use, with permission from anyone pictured.
- They're never stored by us. Photos are resized on your own phone and streamed through our game server in memory to the other screens in your room. They're never written to disk on our servers and never retained. See the Privacy Policy for the full picture.
- Nothing objectionable. Don't add content that is illegal, sexually explicit, harassing, hateful, violent, or otherwise objectionable, and don't use the Service to abuse other players. There's no tolerance for this, and no warning owed.
- You keep your rights. You grant us only the narrow permission needed to show your photos on the screens in your own session, for as long as that session lasts. Display names work the same way — don't pick one that's abusive or impersonates someone.
7. Moderation — how a bad photo gets dealt with
Because photos live only in the room and only for the length of the session, moderation happens live, in the room, not afterwards by us:
- The host can remove any player's photo (it's replaced with a plain avatar) and can remove ("kick") any player from the room at any time.
- Any player can report another player. The report goes to that room's host, who can act on it immediately. Hosting is a position of trust; if you host, take reports seriously.
- To reach us, use the in-app feedback form or email hello@playtableapp.com. We read these and act on reports of objectionable content or abusive behaviour promptly, and we can restrict access to the Service.
- What we can't do: review or delete an image after the fact. We never receive or keep a copy, so there is nothing on our side to take down — which is also why removal in the room is immediate and total.
8. Playing the games
The games are for entertainment among people in a room together. A few things worth setting out plainly:
- The host runs the table. The host picks the game, sets the options, adds or removes computer players, can remove a player, and can hand hosting to someone else. Disagreements about the call are between you and your host, not something we arbitrate.
- Computer players are software. Bots you add to fill seats are not other people, and they are labelled as bots on every screen.
- Our rules may not be your rules. We implement traditional public-domain games, and those games have countless regional and household variations. Where our version differs from the one you grew up with, that's a design choice, not a defect — though we always want to hear about it.
- Your hand is private on your own phone. The Service keeps hidden information hidden between devices; it obviously can't stop the person next to you from looking over your shoulder. That part is on your table's honour system.
- No automated play. Don't use scripts, macros, or modified clients to play, and don't interfere with other players' connections.
- Results are bragging rights only. Scores, wins, and the "winning the night" standings carry no prize, no value, and no permanence — we keep no history of them once the room closes.
- Disconnections. If a phone drops off, we try to hold that seat so the player can rejoin, but we can't promise a game survives every network problem, and a game may have to be abandoned.
No real-money gambling. Play Table has no wagering, no cash prizes, and nothing of real-world value to win. Some of the traditional games we implement (poker and blackjack among them) are historically associated with betting; our versions use play chips with no monetary value and no way to buy, cash out, or transfer them. If the people at your table choose to bet among themselves, that's entirely between you, and it's your responsibility to stay on the right side of the law where you live.
9. Sound, casting, and your TV
The TV screen plays announcer voice lines and game sounds. Check your volume before a late-night game — you can mute the table or turn individual sounds off in settings. If you cast the table to a Chromecast or Google TV device, that casting is provided by Google under Google's terms and depends on your own network and hardware; a browser or TV we can't test on may not behave the way we intend.
10. Rules of the table
Don't misuse the Service. Specifically, don't:
- interfere with it, overload it, or try to get into rooms you weren't invited to;
- probe, scan, or attack our servers, or try to get around a limit or a host's decision;
- impersonate someone else, or use it to harass, defraud, or break the law;
- use it to infringe anyone's copyright, trademark, privacy, or publicity rights;
- use it commercially — in a bar, a venue, a stream monetised around it, or a paid event — without asking us first.
11. Purchases and add-ons
Add-ons — announcer voice packs, card decks, board packs, and the Deck Builder — are one-time purchases. There is no subscription and nothing recurring to cancel. They're bought and paid for through the Apple App Store or Google Play, under that store's terms, and unlocked on the store account that bought them. Prices are set and shown by the store in your local currency.
- Nothing you buy makes you win. Add-ons are voices, artwork, and the ability to build your own decks. They don't change odds, deal you better cards, or give any advantage over a player who bought nothing.
- No randomised purchases. There are no loot boxes, no in-game currency, and no gacha. You see exactly what you're buying before you buy it.
- Refunds are the store's. Billing and refunds are handled by the store you bought from, under that store's refund policy — we can't refund a purchase we never processed.
- Restoring. You can restore previous purchases on a new device from within the app, as long as you're signed in to the same store account.
An add-on unlocks content inside Play Table; it isn't a transfer of ownership of that content, and it depends on the Service continuing to exist.
12. Availability
We'll do our best to keep the Service running, but we don't promise it will be available, uninterrupted, or bug-free, and we may change, suspend, or discontinue parts of it. Games, packs, and features can come and go. Since nothing is stored, an outage costs you a game night — please don't rely on the Service for anything more than that.
13. Intellectual property
The Service — its software, artwork, announcer recordings, wordmarks, and the Play Table name — belongs to ALJ Labs LLC and its licensors. The traditional card, tile, and dice games we implement are in the public domain; our implementations, names, and art of them are not.
You keep every right you already had in the photos and names you bring. Nothing in these Terms gives us ownership of your content or a right to use it outside your session.
14. If you got Play Table from Apple or Google
These Terms are between you and ALJ Labs LLC, not with Apple or Google. Those companies aren't responsible for the app or its content. We — not the store — are solely responsible for the app, for any support or maintenance for it, and for addressing any claim that the app doesn't conform or infringes someone's rights. If the app fails to conform to a warranty, Apple may refund the purchase price if you bought it on the App Store; beyond that, Apple has no other warranty obligation. You confirm you aren't located in a country subject to a U.S. government embargo or designated as terrorist-supporting, and aren't on any U.S. government list of prohibited or restricted parties. You must also comply with any applicable third-party terms of the store you used. Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these Terms and may enforce them against you.
15. Disclaimers
The Service is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind to the fullest extent the law allows — including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, and non-infringement. Some places don't allow these exclusions, in which case they don't apply to you.
16. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, we are not liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost data or lost profits, arising out of your use of the Service. Where liability can't be excluded, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us for add-ons in the twelve months before the claim, or twenty-five US dollars. Nothing here limits liability that the law does not allow to be limited — including for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud.
17. Changes to these terms, and ending access
We may update these Terms; when we do, we'll change the date at the top of this page, and material changes will be posted here before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after that means you accept the updated Terms. You can stop using Play Table at any time by closing the room or deleting the app. We may suspend or end access for conduct that breaks these Terms.
18. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Missouri, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and any dispute will be brought in the state or federal courts located in Missouri. If you're a consumer, this doesn't take away the protections of the mandatory law of the place you live. If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest stays in force.
